I was on a walk the other evening with two of my friends. It was a gorgeous afternoon. Beautiful clear sky, a few puffy clouds and a slight breeze to cool the skin and keep the bugs away. A lovely night. Before we completed our three mile circle, the wind had picked up and there was a dark cloud off to our right. Soon we heard a few claps of thunder and saw the flash of lightening. Behind us the sky was blue. To the left of us there was this rainbow in the sky.
All at the same time we watched a storm, witnessed a rainbow and gazed on the calm blue sky. It was amazing!
God’s rainbow is a reminder of His promise, initially to Noah that He would never flood the earth again. The rainbow is also a reminder to us that our God is faithful to His Word.
Sometimes God sends a rainbow at the end of the storm to say, “See… I got you through this. Why did you doubt?”
God can send a rainbow in the middle of the storm to say, “I’m going to get you through this… Do not fear!”
He may send a rainbow before the storm to say, “It’s clear now and be thankful. For if it storms again I will be with you as I am now.”
Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s go over to the other side of the lake” (Luke 8:22). Jesus immediately gets comfortable and falls fast asleep. A huge storm hits the boat! The disciples were in great danger. They knew they were in danger. These were seasoned fishermen and they were familiar with the Sea of Galilea. This was their home territory. They woke Jesus, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” (vs. 24). Jesus calmed the storm. He turned to the disciples and asked them a short question, “Where is your faith?” I imagine they left their faith on the shore. Their faith disappeared in the face of this storm.
I don’t know what storm you are facing right now. I know some of you are facing storms that could sink your boat and wreck your life. I encourage you today to trust in the One who can calm the storm.
Trust in the One who will sit with you through the storm.
Trust in the One who will put your life back together after the storm.
The promise is clear. The rainbow is the reminder. Even if it’s storming all around you… look up! Can you see it? Keep watching…
