One Step to Fearless

One Step to Fearless

“There is no fear in love.  But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.  The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”  1 John 4:18

We cannot claim to love, and be gripped by fear at the same time.  It is not possible.

Researchers conducted studies on the human brain of participants involved in a romantic love relationship.  They examined the brains of these individuals with the use of functional MRI studies.  They discovered when the human brain is feeling the emotion of love certain regions of the brain are activated.  Just as some regions show higher activity there is a decrease of activity in other areas. “Areas that show reduced activity include the amygdala and the frontal and prefrontal cortecies. The amygdala is associated with fear and aversive learning, or learning from one’s mistakes.” http://mentalfloss.com/article/48906/what-happens-your-brain-when-you-fall-love

Why does this matter?

The part of the brain that shows reduced activity (the amygdala), is the part of the brain that triggers the emotion of fear.

When the human brain feels the emotion of love the part of the brain responsible for fear is diminished.

“Perfect love drives out fear.”

This is a powerful thought.  We cannot feel the emotion of love and fear at the same time!  If fear is an issue for you there is only one cure.   The one thing that can free us from the stronghold of fear is love.

The phrase “fear has to do with punishment” is actually more accurately translated “fear has punishment”.  This is a completely different statement.  Fear is itself punishment.  It keeps the individual from experiencing love, giving love and walking in freedom.  It is the punishment.  John ends his dialogue on love by changing his thought to fear.  The early church had much to fear. John was giving them instruction, not on how to avoid fear, but on how to love perfectly!  This is the antidote to fear.

There are 365 “fear nots” in the Bible; one for every single day of the year.  Each fear not statement in the Bible is ended with “fear not for I am with you.”  We do not need to fear because we have God with us.  He is Emmanuel.  This fact should drive out all fear; if we believe this statement.
