Last fall, Gary and I planted star jasmine along our fence on the north side of the house. It smells so good! It’s fast growing and loves to climb. Gary promises in about a year it should be covering the entire fence. Things grow quickly in California.
This morning I was enjoying my breakfast at the kitchen table. The kids were off to school and I had a moment to sit and enjoy the relative silence. The only noise interrupting my peace was the slight hum of the whole house fan. We turn the fan on in the cool of the mornings and evenings. The fan pulls the cooler air from outside in the house and pushes the hot air out. It works pretty slick.
As I sat at my table I could smell the fragrance of the jasmine. The fan was pulling in the wonderful smell from my back yard. It brought a smile to my face. I was so thankful for jasmine and for the house fan.
Gary and I took the time to plant the jasmine for this very reason. We hoped to one day enjoy its beauty and its fragrance. Now the sweetness of this plant was filling our entire home.
Our walk with Jesus works the same way. We have to make a decision to “plant” good things into our hearts and our minds. Then we reap a harvest of beauty and sweet fragrance.
“A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:7b -9
If we had failed to plant the jasmine then we would have weeds growing along the side of our house. We had to plant the jasmine and take care of it. We had to water, weed, and feed the plants.
What are we feeding our minds? What are we bringing into our homes? What has crept in through our distraction and apathy? #focusedfaith #guardyourthoughts #harvestofjoy
“The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45
